About Karen Oleson
Karen Oleson is that rare singer who excels in opera, musical theatre, oratorio, operetta, art song, symphony or cabaret.
With La Vie en Rose, her one-woman cabaret show featuring the songs of Edith Piaf, Marlene Dietrich, and Billie Holiday, she has toured widely, including on The Royal Viking and several other cruise lines. For her one-woman show A Slow Boat to China, she won a place of honor in the Brandeis University Library for Inspirational Performance. She was also presented in concert at the Idaho Jazz Festival.
Her opera credits include Die Walkure with the Seattle Opera, La Voix Humaine, a one-woman mono-drama opera, and a tour in which she performed the role of Dorabella in the Mozart opera Così Fan Tutte.
As a symphony soloist, she has appeared with many orchestras, including the Minnesota Orchestra, Seattle Symphony, and Portland Symphony. She also toured under the auspices of King County as a recitalist.
Karen is an equity actress whose favorite roles include Desiree in A Little Night Music at the Civic Light Opera, Sarah in Guys and Dolls at Anchorage Light Opera Theatre, and Mary in Little Mary Sunshine at the Alhecambra Players. Other shows include, The Sound of Music, Fiddler on the Roof, and Do You Own Thing.
Education and Academic Experience
Karen received her Master of Arts in Music from the University of Washington, a Bachelor of Music from the University of Idaho, and also studied at the University of Colorado and Music Academy of the West.
She has been on the faculties of Pacific Lutheran University and Cornish College of the Arts. She is a member of S.A.I., a professional women’s music fraternity, National Association of Teachers of Singing, and Music Educators National Conference.
Karen has joined forces with Tim Strong, pianist, composer, teacher both in marriage and music. They have toured widely with “A Sacred Cabaret” having performed in Toronto, Canada, Orlando, Florida, Chicago, Ill. And are in demand throughout the Puget Sound area of Washington state. They frequently give training workshops throughout the United States. Their latest collaboration, “I’m Vocalizing 2” is the happy result of their union.
