Vocalizing for Students

Very often my High Schools students come to their voice lessons after school and they have already had several hours of singing before they get to me. They have had Jazz choir, Concert Choir, or Musical Theatre Class. How they still have a voice is beyond me but occasionally when we had alot to accomplish during their voice lesson, I’ll suggest we skip the warm up since they have been singing so much that day. Now occasionally that works but often the student needs to be refocused on posture (they a bit weary after all), so some deep breathing  re-oxgenates the blood – doing a lot of yawning which the effect of waking one up at the same time releasing tight throat muscles.

when I was performing full time and had to get to a gig after being up all day busy with family – I would often force myself to yawn all the way to the gig. By the time I got there, I felt rejuvenated and ready to go. Anytime you increase oxygen in your blood stream, you will wake up and feel more energized.
