Here’s what they’re saying about Vocalizing!
“A novel approach to learning to sing in different vocals styles. It’s witty, fun and educational.â€
Charles W. Walton, Professor Emeritus, Lionel Hampton School of Music
â€The original “I’m Not Crazy, I’m Vocalizing!” has been a mainstay of my group-voice classes at the University of New Mexico since it first came out. My private students use the tape or CD for warming up on their own, singing in the car, and for supplementing their personal voice-building exercises. I’ve been keeping a copy in my own car for those long drives to rehearsals where I have no warm-up time. Karen’s exercises are not only fun and entertaining, but form a great group of whole-voice exercises, top to bottom, loud to soft and back again.
Young beginners and seasoned pros in my studio all beg for a few of their special favorites: “Gospel Octaves” and “Latin Spits” are the most popular (and I get a kick out of playing them on the piano, too).
Now the new Vocalizing 2 will put even advanced students’ ears and voices to work. Instead of the typical warm-ups in major keys that so many teachers use daily, students are asked to sing chromatic motives, minor arpeggios, mix styles between classical and jazz readings of the same exercise. And yes, there is still a great Gospel style exercise that encourages experiments in dynamics and in improvisation.
Am I going to tell students about Vocalizing 2? No question about it. I can’t wait to know every singer can maneuver a chromatic scale evenly both up and down. And I still love playing Gospel piano during vocalizes.â€

“Vocalizing 1 and 2 are just stupendous. I love it and my adult choir, middle and high school students love it!â€
